Vineyards

The vineyards are without a doubt what makes Primitiu de Bellmunt special. Minute yields, often as little as 250 grams per vine, ensure that the grapes are of the highest quality. With the exception of a new 1.5 hectare parcel of land in Els Molins which is currently not used in the blend, all the other vineyards are over 70 years old.

All the vineyards enjoy Priorat's typical llicorella soil, a kind of degraded flint with excellent draininge and almost no organic content, ensuring low yields and high phenolic concentration in the grapes.

El Grinyó

El Grinyó is an 80 year old coster vineyard, with the vines planted directly into the steep hillside. Planted with Garnatxa and Carinyena, it produces some of the highest quality grapes for Primitiu de Bellmunt. The steepness of the vineyard makes it impossible to mechanise any of the work. All treatments have to be done by hand, and even during picking, the boxes of grapes have to be manually carried to the bottom of the hill, the only place with access for a tractor.

Mas de Caldera

Mas de Caldera was the first vineyard in Bellmunt to be replanted after the Phylloxera plague in the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest plantations in Priorat at over 110 years old. Minute yields from the Garnatxa vines are a testimony to the care with which the Bartolomé family have nursed this vineyard over the years.

Els Molins

Els Molins forms a natural amphitheatre, with a combination of steep coster slopes, and some newer plantations in the valley floor. The grapes from these new plantations are currently sold on to other producers, but ensure the long term future of the cellar.
